About Us
Food Is Family
At Sylvia's Market & Deli, we are committed to being a cornerstone of the Hill District community. Our mission is to serve not just delicious meals, but also to create a safe, welcoming space for people to connect and enjoy their time together.
Our Story
Sylvia’s Market & Grill was created by Sylvia Hatchin, a proud Hill District entrepreneur with a heart for feeding people. physically and emotionally. Built on the belief that food brings people together, the store reflects a simple truth: when you feed people with love, you build family.
What started as a neighborhood market and grill has grown into a trusted community staple. Sylvia’s is known for:
- Barbeque barrels lit all year long
- Fresh, hot soul food made with care
- A welcoming space for neighbors of all ages
- A commitment to the well-being of Hill District families
For Sylvia, this business isn’t just about meals, it’s about memories, mentorship, and making sure everyone has a place where they belong.
Sylvia Hatchins
Sylvia Lynn Hatchins is the owner and heart behind Sylvia’s Market & Deli, a beloved neighborhood staple located on Centre Avenue in Pittsburgh’s historic Hill District. What began as a vision for a small deli has grown into a trusted gathering place where the aroma of barbecue welcomes residents long before they reach the door. For Sylvia, food is more than a business—it’s a way to nourish community. “This is real food,” she often says, emphasizing the importance of access to home-cooked meals in a rapidly developing neighborhood.
A self-described “community person,” Sylvia has spent decades investing in the people around her. She is known for simple but powerful acts of care, from occasionally offering free hot dogs and juice to schoolchildren to greeting longtime customers by name. Before opening Sylvia’s Market & Deli, she operated a convenience store in Elmore Square for 12 years, where she mentored neighborhood youth by teaching them how to work a cash register and understand responsibility, money, and work ethic. Though that business closed during renovations, the relationships Sylvia built never did—many of the children she once guided are now adults who continue to support her business.
Looking ahead, Sylvia envisions expanding Sylvia’s Market & Deli into a full-service restaurant with seating and a completed commercial kitchen. She is also passionate about introducing healthier menu options to help address high blood pressure and diabetes within the community. Her broader hope for the Hill District is one of stability and pride—more Black homeownership, stronger neighbor-to-neighbor support, and collective growth. Grounded in the belief of “each one teach one,” Sylvia continues to lead with care, consistency, and a deep commitment to the place she calls home.

The Historical Hill District
The Hill District of Pittsburgh was one of the city’s earliest and most vibrant urban neighborhoods. By the early 20th century it had become a bustling center for African American life, culture, and business, especially following the Great Migration of Black families to the North for industrial jobs. Centre Avenue served as one of the neighborhood’s main commercial arteries — lined with markets, shops, cultural institutions, and entertainment venues that anchored community life for decades.
In the 1920s and 1930s, you could find everything from local stores like Gordon’s Shoe Store at Centre Avenue and Kirkpatrick Street — just a few doors away from the 2200 block — to significant social institutions such as the Centre Avenue YMCA, which opened in 1922 and was one of the few recreational and cultural facilities accessible to Black Pittsburghers during segregation.
However, the corridor and the neighborhood also endured hardship. Urban renewal and highway construction in the mid-20th century razed large swaths of Lower Hill, displaced thousands of residents, and severed community connections to downtown — a trauma that drastically reshaped Centre Avenue’s character and economic life
